Astronomy Picture of the Day: The Best Thing from NASA Since the Moonshot

I like this photo despite the complaining author after it.  Astronomy photos can be very cool.

This year, our government will spend about three trillion of your and my dollars. Some of it will be spent wisely. Much of it will be spent stupidly. Some of it will be flat-out stolen. And a very tiny portion of it will be used to bring a little joy into the world.

"That's not government's job!" you say. I agree. I also do not really care. I am just back from my daily visit to NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day, and the five minutes I spent there contemplating the vastness and beauty of the Jellyfish Nebula has put me in a state close to Zen detachment. Half a million dollars for a teapot museum? A couple billion in subsidies for corporate farms? A trillion for a war we can neither win nor lose? Life is pain, the Buddha taught, and federal spending is like a fork in the eye — but only if you cling to quaint values like common sense and honest bookkeeping. And besides, how much does a blog cost? Not even the Buddha can answer that. So let go. Forget about appropriations, Shuttle damage even. Merge with the cosmos. Visit APOD. And appreciate your taxes for once. Every single day.
